Frida Kahlo Tribute Painting – “Yo Y Mis Urracas”

Hey guys – time to finally present to you all my Frida Kahlo tribute painting which I painted for June Leeloo’s curated show at Distinction Gallery. The show is filled with amazing artists, I feel so fortunate and thankful to have been included. For my Frida I decided to go for a subject she quite liked and appreciated – a self portrait.

“Yo Y Mis Urracas” – 11 x 14 in. – oil on masonite

So here it is, my self portrait, based on one of her own paintings where she sits with her parrots. I don’t own any birds myself (nor should I probably ever own a bird again!) but I chose a bird which has a lot of meaning to me – the magpie. Magpies show up in my work quite frequently. They are like this lame inside joke I try to play with myself. I am so overly suspicious of them I cringe every time I see one… which is daily basically 😛

It all stems down to this one rhyme I heard while I was living in Berlin – about counting magpies and what each meant. Over the years – I had forgotten what each of the numbers meant and substituted it instead with “odd is bad” and “even is good”… leading to my sneaking suspicion magpies were flying in my direction to send me little messages of what was to come.

You probably think I am a little bit crazy at this point and that’s cool. We all gotta have our quirks. And the magpies themselves were perfect for this painting. Frida Kahlo to me was a woman who went through many a trial and tribulation. She lived through a lot of pain and sorrow and still had the wisest things to say – a light of positivity through the dark.

We all have our own trials and tribulations – the good and the bad which to me is what the magpies represent. I painted myself with my own little messages, as she would of done, in tribute to her and her journey.
